Scent Work

In AKC Scent Work, dogs sniff out cotton swabs that contain essential oils of Birch, Anise, Clove, and/or Cypress. These cotton swabs are hidden in a search area and the dog has to sniff them out. Once the dog finds the odor, they have to identify to their handler, who then lets the judge know. Golden Retrievers are often very good at scent work!
NSGRC often holds scent work classes for beginners and advanced students.

Tony Gravley is coming to Arkansas next month to present “Building a Search Monster,” a powerful, results-driven workshop built from decades of real-world experience training professional detection dogs and operational teams.

In the professional detection world, a bomb dog must possess unwavering focus, intense desire to locate odor, the ability to solve complex problems, and a relentless commitment to finding source. This workshop translates those proven concepts directly into companion and sport detection training in a clear, practical, and approachable system.

Building a Search Monster is highly beneficial for dogs at all stages of their Nose Work journey. For younger dogs, it establishes a foundation that will positively shape their entire detection career. For more experienced or older dogs, the impact is often transformative, rekindling motivation, sharpening problem-solving skills, and restoring deep commitment to source.

This workshop goes beyond simply presenting challenging searches. Teams will work through targeted exercises designed to:

  • Develop stronger desire, drive, and commitment to source

  • Enhance problem-solving skills without handler conflict

  • Give dogs the tools and confidence to work through odor puzzles independently

  • Build motivation to get to source like you have never experienced before

Equally important, handlers will gain a clear understanding of the how and why behind each exercise. Tony breaks down concepts in a way that demystifies source commitment and empowers handlers to become more effective trainers long after the workshop concludes.

Participants will leave with:

  • A clearer, more purposeful training plan

  • Improved ability to support their dog without over-handling

  • Greater confidence in developing and maintaining a true “source monster”

  • Skills that directly translate to more consistent and successful trialing experiences

If you are looking to elevate your dog’s commitment to source, and your own understanding of how to build it, this workshop delivers tools, insight, and clarity that will carry forward into every search you run.
